ENX is the abbreviation of "European Network Exchange" and is both the name for the association and for the network.
The objective of the ENX Association is to develop and operate standardised communications services for the European automotive industry as well as other sectors. It serves to securely exchange development-, production control- and logistic data. The ENX Association is the organisational roof of the entire ENX concept and engine of the further development.
The non profit organisation ENX Association was founded in June 2000 by Audi Bosch, BMW, Daimler, Fiat, Ford, Karmann, MAN, Opel, Porsche, PSA, smart, VDO Automotive, Volvo and Volkswagen as well as the national automobile associations ANFAC, GALIA, SMMT and VDA.
It monitors the quality of the services offered by the providers, makes central services available and supports these with its escalation management to efficiently solve arising problems. This enables the providers to offer users a one-stop service.
The ENX network offers quality- and security-features which usually can be found only in company networks and at the same time it is as flexible as the public Internet for the participating users. The network infrastructure and the individual accesses are provided by certified service providers (CSPs) which are bound by contract to the requirements and specifications of the ENX concept.

The ENX Association operates a communications network and managed security services for the entire European automotive industry and beyond.
ENX enables all connected users to exchange data cross-company as well as cross-border in a unified, harmonised way.

The automobile manufacturers are the originators of the ENX but its utilisation is not limited to the automobile industry.
The founders of the ENX have sponsored the development of the network and their main interest is first of all concentrated on the partners within the automobile value chain.
However, the ENX network is open to businesses and industries outside the automobile industry. For example, ENX is already in use in the European defence and the aeronautics industry.
It is also obvious that manufacturers and automobile suppliers have communication needs with organisations outside the automobile industry. For example, the German customs, the French customs, the German "Bundeskriminalamt" the French "Gendarmerie", the German Kraftfahrtbundesamt and other governmental authorities are connected.
Cascading the implementation of ENX through the companies at all tiers, naturally other industries will follow.

1.4. Who provides ENX accesses?

The network infrastructure and the individual accesses are provided by reliable certified telecommunication service providers.
These providers are contractually bound to the ENX Certification and Operation Requirements (ENX CORE) and are allowed to offer ENX services. The offer of the providers has been certified by the ENX Association, thus ensuring the exceptionally high reliability, security and efficiency of the network as a whole.
